Film-Dokumentation: Karl Richter Trilogie - Vorschau Teil 3

With him one learnt for the first time the meaning of the term articulation. He made it very clear to us how articulation was to sound, and he always regretted that orchestra musicians inherently were unable to articulate well. (Paul Meisen)

Once a student played a Bach composition while Richter paced the gallery and listening to him. Then I saw from a distance how he briefly whispered something to him and the said, "Let me play it myself" and sat down and did so. And it was a completely different composition, and I thought not only is the composition different but the organ as well. It was something totally new for me, that the use of articulation could achieve a completely different sound. I thought at first that he had changed the register, but it was just his articulation alone, that had changed everything. (Peter-Lukas Graf)

Tempo

Another thing I learnt from him, that influenced me very much indeed, was his relationship to Tempo. I was able to grasp that if the Tempo was to be a slow one then It had to be played inside out, meaning it had to be played quickly, and if a fast Tempo was chosen it had to be played slowly. (Paul Meisen)

Kieth Engen

Karl Richter never justified a rhythm, he just went through with it. And he always said, Tempo is always something physical, to be felt and sent out in ones music, and in one’s being and then it is right. His tempo was always different, but it was always right. (Kieth Engen)

Richter’s Tempi were incredibly full and complete and he expected us to feel this. (Julia Hamari)

Yes, but sometimes the one Tempo was right and then the next time another but he sat at the cembalo and played and improvised, then he would give his cues and so forth and the tempo was always right. There was never a tempo were you were afraid you would not have enough breath,,, the way it often is these days. Some evenings it was a bit faster, others it was slower, just as it occurred to him, just depending on how he felt. (Edda Moser)

Richter konnte unglaublich langsame Tempi spannen, durchspannen.

Richter could stretch and hold slow Tempi in an unbelievable way. (Hertha Töpper)
